FT-70DR C4FM FDMA / FM 144/430 MHz DUAL BAND 5W Handheld Transceiver
The new FT-70DR is a compact and very attractively priced YAESU System Fusion transceiver providing both conventional analog FM operation and the advanced C4FM Digital mode.
The FT-70DR provides up to 5W of reliable RF power, and its large Front Speaker delivers 700mW of Loud Audio Output. Because C4FM has better BER (Bit Error Rate) characteristics than other digital modulations, the user can expect exceptional audio quality.
The new digital FT-70DR includes our unique Automatic Mode Select (AMS) function. AMS detects the operating mode of the received signal as C4FM digital or analog FM, and then automatically and instantly switches the receiver to the appropriate mode. Users do not need to manually change between modes.
The multi-colored LED Mode-Indicator displayed on the front allows the operator to easily see what mode the FT- 70DR is in at any given moment. LED Mode-Indicator clearly and visibly shows the transmit/ receive mode by changing its color so that the operating mode of the transceiver is easily recognized at a glance.
One of the other distinguishing features of the FT-70DR is Digital Group Monitor (GM) with DG-ID and DP-ID. DGID (Digital Group Identification) and DP-ID (Digital Personal Identification) are useful features now included in the FT-70DR, to simplify the GM operation. Simply put, the transceivers selecting the same DG-ID or DP-ID can communicate with each other. Between 00 and 99 DG-ID and DP-ID are selectable which provides loads of flexibility so that users can enjoy group communication with friends in GM mode in accordance to their individual operational needs.
Other included standard features and functions are; IP54 Rating (Dust/ Water Protection) construction, wide band receive coverage of 108 – 579.995MHz, Versatile Scanning Capabilities such as Programmable VFO Scan, Memory Scan, and Priority Channel Scan, External DC Jack for DC Supply Operation and to Charge the Battery, Mini USB port for convenient programming and software updates, CTCSS/ DCS Operation, Automatic Power Off (AFO) feature, RF Squelch, Transmitter Time Out Timer (TOT) and Busy Channel Lock-Out (BCLO).

This is a fantastic radio it gives me more options. This way I don't have to carry more than one radio when I'm out and about. It has a great front end in it I get very few stray RF bursts. I live in an area that has a lot of businesses. It even rejects the little bit of RF my coradical stimulator puts out when it is close to it.

Pretty much everything good about the FT-60, but now with Fusion digital mode and improved battery technology. It's a little lighter than the FT-60, maybe not *quite* as bulletproof, but plenty tough. Easy to program by hand too. Good price, and as always, good dealing with MTC.

Pro:Fusion digital mode at a low price. Easy to hand-program. Well-labeled keypad & controls. Li battery is a big improvement over older NiMH tech -- no memory effects, so top off the charge whenever heading out. Typical Yaesu made-in-Japan quality.
Con: Weird "pop the battery in, pop the battery out, now do the hokey-pokey and turn it all about" computer programming sequence, never could get that to work. But hand programming works great. No AA battery tray available.
Every bit as easy to use and field-worthy as the old FT-60, but now with Fusion and a Li battery. It's a little lighter too, 0.6 vs 0.8 lb. It uses some juice when powered down, so pop the battery out (easy) between sessions. If you even have an inkling that you might ever want Fusion, this is the way to go in an affordable hand-held.

When I started in ham radio in the 90s you paid a lot more for a radio that did a lot less. Amazing how capable these radios are. Some people complain about battery life but I’ve been very pleased. Sound is good, it is much more simple to operate than my old VX6R, digital with a hotspot is really fun.
In fairness, I bought it for my 9 year old girl for passing her Tech exam, but I’m having as much fun with it as she is. I probably should’ve bought two.

I really like the fit and feel of this HT. I have a TH-D74A for D-STAR and now a FT-70DR for Fusion. I can now go to ham heaven (with my radios). Good radios and good service from MTC and my ol' buddy Richard.

I have been enjoying the use of and learning experience of the Yaesu FT-70DR handheld. Both the Fusion and the FM experience has been great. Sidenote - Learning the Fusion system has been easier than learning the D-Star system.

The radio works very well on both FM and C4FM. The menu system can be very confusing and incomplete in parts. Once you figure out the menus, it's a great little radio...but with a very small battery.
