SPE Expert 2K-FA Review: The Amp That Finally Made QRO Effortless
I’ve owned a lot of amplifiers over the years. The last one I ran seriously was the ACOM 1500, and that’s a very good amp—solid, plenty of power, no complaints about what it does. Then I put the SPE Expert 2K-FA in the shack. It isn’t just another step up in watts. It’s a different way of operating.
This is, by a wide margin, the easiest amplifier I have ever used.
Once the antennas are set up, the 2K-FA is essentially instant-tune. Fire up the transmitter, pick the frequency, and start talking. That’s it. No warm-up ritual. No hunting with a tuner while the pileup moves on. No “wait, is this still matched?” moment. It is a genuine game changer when you need to come up on a frequency quickly.
The built-in automatic tuner is the other half of why this amp changed how I operate. On this newer version, the ATU is specified to match loads up to 5:1 SWR. That is not a small detail. It lets me run QRO on my 160-meter loop across 6 through 160 meters. Same amp, same workflow, on the VHQ hexbeam. Two very different antennas, one amplifier that just follows the radio.
That combination—full-legal-limit solid-state power, no-wait readiness, and a 5:1 internal tuner that actually lives with real antennas—is what sold me. I don’t babysit this amp. I operate.
Coverage is 1.8–50 MHz including WARC and 6 meters. Power is selectable MAX / MID / LOW, which is useful for digital modes and for keeping things cool when you don’t need every last watt. Drive is modest, protections are thorough, and the input stays a clean 50-ohm load for the transceiver. Output is clean. Fans stay civil until they’re actually needed.
The 2K-FA is also compact for what it is: integrated power supply and tuner in a relatively small box. Six antenna ports, stored matching data by band/sub-band, CAT integration so band and antenna follow the radio. After setup, the operator’s job really is just to turn the VFO.
I’m not saying the ACOM 1500 is a poor amp. It isn’t. I’m saying that after living with both, the Expert 2K-FA is the one I reach for without thinking. Setup once. Tune stored. Frequency selected. Transmit. That is how QRO should feel.
If you want an amplifier that disappears into the operating position instead of becoming another project on the desk, the SPE Expert 2K-FA is it. For my loop, my hexbeam, and the way I actually get on the air, it has been outstanding.
